One of the problems of identifying plants from photographs is that sometimes it could be one of two species. So this could be the bushier spiny restharrow which is quite rare in our area or just a bushy form of the more common restharrow. You have to look at the leaves and hairs on the stem closely to work it out. Writing ‘Ononis species’ is a way of saying I know it’s a restharrow I just don’t have enough information to tell which one it is.
